Lorde Wants You To Register To Vote In Exchange For New Music In 2021

Want new music from Lorde in 2021? Well, you have to exercise your right to register and vote.

On Wednesday (October 7), the New Zealand pop star, 23, took to Instagram Story to tease new music, while simultaneously encouraging fans to vote in the upcoming general election on October 17 in her native New Zealand. "Are you from New Zealand? I am," she wrote. "We know we live in a special place. And adding all of our voices to the conversation, speaking up for communities or organisations that mean something to us — that’s what helps keep it that way."

"Do it for our beautiful country and for me. And next year I'll give you something in return," she captioned a photo of a green leaf, pair with some selfies and seaside sunset shots. In addition, she also referenced two referendums: the End of Life Choice Bill and the Cannabis Legislation Control Bill.

Back in May, Lorde teased new music with Jack Antonoff in a lengthy e-mail to fans. "I started going back to the studio again in December, just for something to do, and to my surprise, good things came out," she said about the follow-up to 2017's Melodrama. "Happy, playful things. I felt my melodic muscles flexing and strengthening."

As per her e-mail, Lorde and Antonoff met up in her home country and Los Angeles, where "a thing started to take shape," but then "the world shut down." Nonetheless, the two are still hacking at it remotely. "We're still working away -- Jack and I FaceTimed for over an hour this morning going over everything. But it'll take a while longer. I know now how excited I am to get back out there," she wrote. "I want to eat summer foods in beautiful countries—ice cream and tomatoes and anchovies. I want to use my gift, and watch it grow. Who knows when it’ll be safe to do those things, but I’m craving them, and I wanted you to know."
