Jewel's new art exhibition, "Matriclysm: An Archaeology of Connections Lost," features a painting that not-so-subtly pays a reference to Kim Kardashian.
The Grammy-nominated musician's artwork, which is part of her larger "Ceremony Series" collection, depicts a VHS tape labeled "Kim K," a nod to Kardashian's sex tape with singer Ray J.
The SKIMS founder and "Sexy Can I" singer dated for three years before calling it quits in 2005. In 2007, their sex tape was infamously leaked to the public.
"It's meant to shame you," the "Intuition" singer explained to PEOPLE on Thursday (April 16). "But what happens when a woman decides it's her story to own? I find it fascinating, the way women learn to control the narratives about them... where they take sexuality and their persona as a performance art. That's empowering.
The musician's larger new exhibition is inspired by female narratives throughout history, as well as how figures like Kardashian have taken control of their own stories in modern times.
"These women began to control their narratives and take those narratives and say, 'No, this is my story to tell, and I'm going to tell it how I want,'" the "Hands" songstress added.
Jewel's new exhibition will be on view at the Salone Verde in Venice, Italy, May 6-Nov. 22.
